Issues and Innovation in Routine Health Information in Developing Countries

March 14-16, 2001
Bolger Center for Leadership Development
Potomac, Maryland

The USAID-funded MEASURE Evaluation Project, JSI, the World Bank and the World Health Organization hosted an international workshop on Issues and Innovation in Routine Health Information in Developing Countries on March 14-16, 2001 in Potomac, Maryland. This workshop provided a forum for reviewing and analyzing exceptional practices and lessons learned in the collection and use of routine health information, and it provided a basis for coordinating future international and local investment in this area. The RHINO workshop brought together both information system designers and data users/decision-makers in order to accomplish several objectives:

  • Reaching a common understanding among decision-makers and practitioners on the rationale for increasing investment in routine health information development;
  • Identifying future areas for investment in routine health information that reflect the demands of health sector reform in developing countries;
  • Documenting common barriers to establishing and sustaining effective routine health information systems and strategies to minimize their effects;
  • Disseminating state-of-the-art practices in routine health information system design, management and data use;
  • Defining an agenda for action and research that includes specific activities to be pursued by the Routine Health Information Network (RHINO), as well as resource requirements.
